Tanzania is one of the few places where lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino all still range within a few hours of one another. Here is where each of them lives, and when the odds are best.

Lion
The Serengeti holds one of the largest lion populations left on earth. In the Ngorongoro Crater they are unusually relaxed around vehicles.

Leopard
The hardest of the five. Look up — they rest through the heat in the sausage trees and acacias along the Seronera river valley.

Elephant
Tarangire draws enormous herds to the river in the dry season, when the rest of the landscape has nothing left to drink.

Buffalo
Common, and more dangerous than they look. Old solitary bulls — the ones the herd has pushed out — are the ones guides watch carefully.

Black rhino
Critically endangered, and the reason many people come to the crater at all. A small, closely guarded population lives on the Ngorongoro floor.
